This article discusses the use of a nationwide insurance database to study skull base tumors. The authors describe their experience using the Optum Clinformatics Data Mart, an anonymized nationwide private insurance database, to study transsphenoidal resection of pituitary adenomas. They found a total of 7,295 records using diagnosis and procedure codes. The quality of the data in the database depended on the documentation and coding in patients' charts, and there were limitations such as inaccurate reflection of date-sensitive information and missing data. The authors conclude that proper planning and analysis are necessary when using a nationwide insurance database for skull base research, and suggest the need for a centralized, nationwide, collaborative skull-base registry.
