This article discusses the coding guidelines for procedures involving magnetically controlled spinal-lengthening devices used to treat early-onset scoliosis (EOS). Traditional growing rods require manual lengthening in the operating room every 6 months, while the newer devices can be lengthened externally using a remote control. The American Medical Association (AMA) does not currently have specific codes for these procedures, so surgeons are advised to use the unlisted code for spine surgery (22899). The article also addresses coding for rod replacement and conversion to spinal fusion. The authors hope that in the future, specific codes will be created to accurately describe these procedures.
