The damage of three-story office building structure due to Pidie Jaya earthquake.

Abstrakt: A lot of damages have been caused by several earthquakes in Aceh and an example is the one experienced in Pidie Jaya Regency on December 7, 2016. The earthquake measured 6.5Mw and caused several damages to the surrounding buildings. Therefore, this research was conducted to analyze the earthquake effect on the reinforced concrete structure of a three-story office building. The approach implemented was field observations and analysis of the building structure by modeling it as a space frame using SAP 2000 software. It is, however, important to note that this research also focused on the dynamic analysis of the response spectrum. The field observation was used to determine the shear and flexural cracks in the beams and columns while the structural analysis was performed in studying the cause of structural damage during the earthquake. The results showed the required shear strength for the floor beams and columns to withstand earthquake loads is higher than the shear capacity they have the ability to carry while the required flexural strength of the beams is greater than the acceptable flexural capacity. The lateral deformation was also observed to be quite large and exceeded the limits permitted by building codes and this means the building is unsafe for use until it is structurally strengthened.
