Black seed oil which is resulted from black cumin seed extract has many health benefits. The present commercial black seed oil is presented in hard capsules. In general, hard capsules are made of gelatin whose raw materials come from animals and are not guaranteed to be halal. The production of seaweed capsules is motivated by non-halal issues and the trend of vegetarian groups. Capsules as drug delivery materials must maintain the quality of the contents inside. This study aimed to determine the stability of black seed oil stored in seaweed capsules with free fatty acid (FFA) and peroxide value as test parameters. The experiment was done by filling seaweed capsules with commercial black seed oil, then storing them in a climatic chamber at 40°C RH 75%. Every ten days, sampling and evaluation of the capsules is carried out, and the results were compared to black seed oil stored in gelatin capsules. The results showed that seaweed capsules containing black seed oil did not change after 50 days, and the oil did not leak. The FFA value of black seed oil stored in seaweed capsules and gelatin capsules was not significantly different, whereas after being stored for 50 days, the value was still below 5%. Peroxide values obtained from storage in seaweed capsules and gelatin capsules had significantly different, where black seed oil in seaweed capsules oxidizes faster than in gelatin capsules. The same performance was shown in seaweed and gelatin capsules after storage for 20 days at 40°C RH 75%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
