This letter, published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, discusses sex differences in first-episode mania (FEM) based on a retrospective chart review. The study examined the demographic and clinical variables of 275 patients with FEM and found no significant differences between males and females in terms of age, prevalence of prior depressive episodes, or positive family history of psychiatric illness. However, males showed higher rates of substance dependence and irritability, while females had higher rates of illiteracy, unemployment, and being married. The study suggests that these factors may contribute to sex-based differences in the course of the illness. [Extracted from the article] |
