A study conducted by Yale University School of Medicine has reported on a rare case of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in a patient who ingested chafing fuel containing diethylene glycol. The patient experienced gastrointestinal symptoms followed by acute kidney injury and peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy. The study suggests that diethylene glycol, which is commonly found in consumer products, can cause TMA and acute tubular injury. The researchers propose that patients with a genetic predisposition to endothelial injury may be at risk for developing TMA after diethylene glycol exposure. [Extracted from the article] |
