The article discusses the growing agency of the Philippines in relation to the Taiwan issue. The recent election of Lai Ching-te as the next president of Taiwan has led to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. publicly congratulating him, which was criticized by China. The Philippines' increased agency is seen in its interpretation of its "One China policy" and its assertive transparency campaign against China's actions in the South China Sea. The article suggests that the Philippines should consider how to exercise its agency in a more proactive and flexible way, while also addressing economic and military implications.
