The importance of carbohydrates is evident by its essential role in all living systems. Their syntheses have attracted chemists' attention for over a century. Most chemical syntheses in this area focused on the preparation of carbohydrates from naturally occurring monosaccharides. de novo chemical synthesis of carbohydrates from feed stock starting materials has emerged as a complementary method for the preparation of diverse mono- and oligosaccharides. The methods of this kind involved the formation of dihydropyran intermediates. In this review we discuss here recent progresses on forming dihydropyran by Achmatowicz rearrangement, Hetero-Diels-Alder cycloaddition, ring-closing metathesis and other methods for the formation of glycosidic bonds for the potential de novo synthesis of oligoglycosides. These carbohydrate molecules are useful for the synthesis of C-/O-/N-/S-glycosides and compounds containing quaternary carbons, provided that the olefin can be properly reduced or functionalized. This review places special emphasis on two aspects of exo-glycals including general methods of preparation and synthetic applications for making biologically important molecules as dihydropyran intermediates in oligoglycoside syntheses.
