Abstrakt: The results of three-dimensional finite element simulations obtained using the ABAQUS computer program of a hypothetical column supported embankment underlain by horizontal geosynthetic reinforcement are presented. In these simulations, deep foundation elements consisting of geosynthetic encased soil columns (GESC) were used. Whereas previous analyses exclusively assumed the GESC to be resting on a rigid soil layer, the present simulations investigate the performance of embankments resting on a compressible layer. In addition, unlike in earlier studies of such embankments, the effect of column spacing is investigated. For GESCs bearing on compressible soil layer, the magnitudes of settlements were found to be higher than for similar columns bearing on a rigid layer. The settlement curves for all three values of column spacing were not linear, indicating that the settlement is less dependent on the height of the embankment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
