Abstrakt: Al Adham dam is located 133 km northeast of Baghdad, was constructed on Al Adhaim River, and started to operate in 2000. It is a multipurpose dam used to flood control, power generation, and irrigation. Its storage capacity reaches 1.5 billion m3. The dam has an ogee spillway to control the flood flow with a length of 562 m, crest level of 131.5 m.a.m.s.l., and a maximum discharge of 1150 m3/s at its maximum flooding elevation of 143 m.a.m.s.l. This study investigates the spillway hydrodynamics and the performance of the stilling basin of Al Adhaim Dam by using numerical simulation models under the design conditions. FLUENT software was applied to simulate flow over a spillway. The free surface was simulated using the fluid volume, VOF, method. The SST k-ω turbulence model was selected to deal with turbulence. The study found that the spillway could carry the design discharge and the flood wave over the spillway. Negative pressure occurs at points along the stilling basin at the crest, the drops in elevation, and at the flip bucket due to high velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
