A recent study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital has identified 13 genetic loci associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a common metabolic disorder affecting over 16 million pregnancies worldwide. The study found that GDM shares a genetic predisposition with type 2 diabetes (T2D), but also has distinct genetic features related to pregnancy. The identified loci are involved in islet cells, glucose homeostasis, steroidogenesis, and placental expression. This research provides valuable insights into the genetic architecture of GDM and its relationship with T2D. [Extracted from the article] |
