A recent study conducted by researchers at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya, has examined the impact of rehydration strategies on children hospitalized with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and diarrhea. The current guidelines for rehydration in SAM cases are conservative and controversial, leading to high mortality rates. The GASTROSAM trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of liberal rehydration strategies using intravenous and oral rehydration solutions in reducing adverse outcomes. The study's findings could potentially influence future treatment recommendations for SAM and prompt further research in this area. [Extracted from the article] |
