Abstrakt: A study conducted by researchers from the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, focused on the presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) in non-human primates (NHP) in the Peruvian Amazon. The researchers collected fecal samples from NHP in the Loreto and Ucayali regions and found that 7.07% of the E. coli strains expressed the ESBL phenotype. Genomic analysis revealed the presence of high-risk pandemic clones carrying a broad resistome to antibiotics. This study highlights the importance of adopting a One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance surveillance and minimizing the transmission risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria at the human-NHP interface.
