"Pressing Forward: Faith, Culture, and African American Youth" by Carmichael Crutchfield with Denise Janssen explores the factors that contribute to the faith formation of African American adolescents. Drawing on Black Church history, Black adolescent identity formation, and ethnographic research conducted with approximately 60 African American youth, Crutchfield argues that intergenerational encounters, critical pedagogy, and contemplative pedagogy are key initiatives for enhancing African American adolescent faith formation. The book also highlights the importance of the Black Church as a place of refuge and resistance against anti-Blackness, as well as the dynamics of the Black family in providing a sense of safety and community. While the book lacks specific details about the research design and data collection, it is a valuable resource for curriculum developers, instructional designers, youth pastors, and religious educators.
