The Global Energy Perspective 2023 report models the outlook for energy demand and supply across different scenarios aligned with the Paris Agreement. The report predicts that power demand will increase globally, with renewables playing a larger role in the power mix. The share of renewables in the global power mix is expected to more than double in the next 20 years. However, there may be obstacles to the build-out of renewables, such as material availability and infrastructure limitations. Flexible assets and storage will be needed to ensure security of supply in a more weather-dependent net-zero system. The report also highlights the need for increased investments in transmission and distribution networks to support the growth of renewables. While the cost of power generation is projected to decline, the share of grid costs is expected to increase. The report emphasizes the importance of system design choices and updates to power market designs to manage the transition to a more decarbonized energy system. [Extracted from the article] |
