Abstrakt: The article examines the work of Alvar Cawén (1886–1935) and the ways it mirrored Finland’s hegemonic ethos in the 1920s. Huusko analyses the subject matter of Cawén’s paintings and the artist’s ‘musical’ treatment of colour, looking for elements that consciously elicited and bolstered patriotic sentiment at a time when Finland actively pursued a policy of national integration. In its methodology, the article is a study of nationalism. Huusko discusses the features of Cawén’s art that stirred patriotic feeling and communal solidarity. Among the significant findings is that Cawén used Lutheran liturgical colours to elicit particular group sentiments. Another interesting finding is that Cawén employed imagery emphasizing the sanctity and transgenerational identity of the agrarian community, which was a stronghold of national conservatism during this era. This comes to light especially in Huusko’s analysis of the altarpiece in Mänttä church (1928). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
