A panel of experts gathered to discuss the potential of the build-to-rent (BTR) sector in addressing the UK's housing crisis. The experts acknowledged that the housing crisis is worsening despite previous initiatives, and highlighted the need for a variety of solutions. They emphasized the importance of increasing the profile of BTR at the local authority level and the need for political support to achieve its full potential. The experts also discussed the advantages of BTR over build-to-sell, such as quicker delivery and long-term investment. They called for a political consensus and longer-term focus on housing, as well as better education and resourcing within the current planning system. The experts identified opportunities for BTR to have a significant impact, such as filling the void left by Help to Buy and upgrading existing housing stock. They also discussed the role of technology in boosting BTR and addressed the perception that renting is inferior to homeownership. The experts emphasized the importance of residents advocating for the BTR sector to influence politicians. [Extracted from the article] |
