A new report from researchers at University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland explores the effects of acetazolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor anticonvulsant, on postural control in healthy individuals aged 40 or older. The study found that spending a night at an altitude of 3,100 meters impaired postural control in this age group. However, the deterioration was mitigated by acetazolamide, likely due to improved oxygenation. These findings suggest that acetazolamide may be beneficial in preventing altitude-induced accidents in older individuals. [Extracted from the article] |
