Abstrakt: The article presents the missionary work of Polish Bernardines which they took in Japanese Sakhalin at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1932 the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith created a separate missionary centre sui iuris and gave it into the care of the Order of Friars Minor, Bernardine province in Poland. Not only was the missionary work of Bernardines in Sakhalin supported by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, but also by the General Curia of the Order of Friars Minor in Rome, as well as by the Provincial Curia of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Province in Poland. Aiming at intensifying the missionary work, in 1938 the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith created the apostolic prefecture in Karafuto. Despite so many efforts of church institutions, due to unfavourable political factors, the Bernardine mission in Sakhalin had to be closed as early as in 1948. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
