The study was conducted in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, to assess the population of active cage farms and farmers for socio-economic analysis. Primary data was collected using a structured and pre-tested interview schedule from 49 cage aquafarmers. The majority of farmers (87.76%) were aged 30-50 years and cage culture was predominantly led by female farmers (65.31% female, 34.69% male). Present cage farmers use monosex Tilapia as candidate species for cage farming. The net return of cage culture was Rs. -4,76,170.34, with a net return on total variable cost of Rs. 4,34,008.51. Benefit-cost ratio (BCR) on total cost was 0.89, while the BCR on total variable cost was 1.12. The economic analysis revealed a negative net return on total cost, but meagre positive net return on total variable cost. Better marketing strategies and optimisation of fish production is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
