This document is a closure to the article "Ground Improvement for Transportation Infrastructure: Experimental Investigations on Cyclic Behavior of a Group of Granular Columns." The authors respond to points raised by a discusser regarding the interpretation of static and cyclic tests. They clarify that a relative density of 50% was chosen to ensure a uniform column diameter in soft soils, and further compaction would lead to intrusion rather than densification. They also explain that the load-carrying capacity of group columns is higher in soft soils, and discuss the densification and resistance mechanisms observed in cyclic tests. The authors agree with the discusser's suggestion to investigate the applicability of the threshold stress concept for the design of stone columns. [Extracted from the article] |
