This article provides a historical overview of the railway bridges 3.9A and 3.9B on Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho, which are part of the Spokane-Sandpoint route. The route experienced congestion in the 1980s and 1990s due to increased train traffic. In 2022, BNSF opened a new bridge, 3.9B, and renovated the old bridge, 3.9A, to alleviate congestion. The article also discusses the history of Burlington Northern and the changes to the rail network in the Spokane area. Hauser Yard, located between Spokane and Sandpoint, has played a significant role in the operations and capacity expansions of The Funnel, a rail corridor between the two cities. The Funnel has undergone double-tracking efforts, with the final segment currently being widened. Although capacity has increased, there are still occasional delays along the route.
