Abstrakt: A novel water-soluble P-N intumescent flame retardant 6-(sodium aminoethane sulfonate)-4-chloro-2-(diethylamino phosphorate phosphoryl chloride)-1,3,5-triazine (CDPST) was synthesized and its structure was determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The flame retardancy of cotton fabrics (CF) treated with CDPST (CDPST-CF) was evaluated using the vertical burning tests, limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimetry. The results indicated the LOI could reach to 28.8% and the flame retardancy reached the class B1 of national standard of flame-retardant fabrics, when CDPST content was increased to 20 wt% (CDPST(20)-CF). In addition, the CDPST(20)-CF showed little decrease on the tensile strength. Comparing with untreated cotton fabric, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of CDPST(20)-CF were reduced by 56.4% and 31.4%, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed CDPST could effectively improves the thermal stability and reduce the thermal decomposition temperature of cotton fabric, even could increase the residual carbon rate. The B1 flame-retardant ratings and LOI = 26.3% could be still obtained after 50 washing cycles, which showed the CDPST(20)-CF had excellent water resistance. The significant improvement of flame retardancy of CDPST(20)-CF was ascribed to the blocking effect of intumescent char in condensed phase, and the diluting effects of abundant nitrogen-containing inert gases in gaseous phase. There was flame-retardant synergism between phosphorus and nitrogen of CDPST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
