A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by researchers at Foundation IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, Italy, aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of dietary and nutritional interventions for treating acute respiratory tract infections in children. The review included 50 studies that assessed various interventions, such as zinc, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, and probiotics. The results were mixed, with some studies showing positive effects on clinical outcomes, while others showed no significant impact. The meta-analysis suggested that zinc supplementation may have a limited benefit in reducing hospital length of stay for children with pneumonia. However, the researchers concluded that more studies are needed, particularly in high-income countries, to establish more conclusive evidence for pediatric acute respiratory diseases.
