Abstrakt: Tagore and Yeats as leading poets and intellectuals respectively of India and Ireland, became foremost advocates of their native high culture; at the same time they were also faced with problems of engaging with while also resisting the literary and linguistic hegemony of England. Drawing upon ideas of Gramsci and Marx, this essay attempts to show how Tagore and Yeats created new domains of culture traversing both the high and proletarian traditions of their respective nations.
