The change in the burial rite in the Early Middle Ages brought new problems in the interpretation of burials. Within the regular graves, with individuals placed in stretched supine position with the head towards the west, occurred also those who defy this rule. They are mainly the graves found outside the cemeteries (isolated graves, graves at settlement, individuals laid in settlement features) and graves of individuals buried at cemeteries but in atypical positions (individuals in prone, lateral, or other rare positions) or orientation (north-southern directions of a grave pit or with the head laid towards the east), eventually the graves with identified posterior interventions. These atypical graves gain the attention of European scientists, who try to interpret them, in the last few years. The paper concentrates on these graves from the territory of western Slovakia from the period of the 9(h to 12th c. and tries to contribute to the understanding of this problem.
