The impact of negative emotions/feelings about taking medicine on non-adherence was examined in 520 health examiners. The survey items included age, gender, height, weight, frequency of meal intake, smoking, alcohol drinking, number of medications, occupation, educational background (junior college, vocational school, or university degree or higher), family structure, awareness of taking medicine, and forgetting to take medicine, which were obtained from the Health Questionnaire. We analyzed the influence of negative awareness about taking medicine (e.g., anxiety, dissatisfaction) on forgetting to take medicine. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that three factors were significantly independently associated with non-adherence: older than 65 years (OR: 0.534, P = 0.035), meal intake three times a day (OR: 0.349, P < 0.001), and negative awareness about taking medicine (OR: 3.450, P < 0.001). Because negative awareness about taking medicine has a negative impact on medication adherence in health-conscious volunteers who participated in a health promotion study, it is necessary to identify the causes of these hindrances at an early stage and link them to behavioral change toward improvement.
