An example of arc steelmaking furnace (ASF) is used to develop an engineering method to estimate the arc voltage gradient as a basic multifactorial electric parameter. The approach of the electric arc heat exchange model (EAHEM) is applied to run a basic two-factor analytical calculation of the average voltage gradient in the arc column expressing it through two parameters: the reactive resistance of the furnace and the secondary voltage of the furnace transformer. The correction of the basic function is made taking into account active resistance in an equivalent ASF circuit and electrode thermal regime. The method proposed makes it possible to calculate the most important energy and physical properties of ASF at the stage of developing technical specifications and, as a result, to select a rational electric mode to operate the designed ASF in order to improve melting power and dynamic properties.
