A recent report from the Medical College of Wisconsin explores the use of stem cell therapies for the management of osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a common and debilitating condition characterized by joint degeneration and pain. While current treatment options aim to alleviate symptoms and slow disease progression, they lack curative potential. Stem cell therapies have emerged as a promising alternative, offering potential disease-modifying benefits through immunomodulatory actions, growth factor secretion, and chondrogenic capabilities. Clinical trials investigating stem cell treatments for OA have reported encouraging radiological and clinical improvements, particularly with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). However, further research is needed to establish long-term efficacy, identify optimal stem cell types, and develop standardized protocols. [Extracted from the article] |
