A report from the Instituto de Medicina Experimental in Buenos Aires, Argentina, discusses the role of neutrophils in the inflammatory response triggered by Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections. The research found that neutrophils secrete Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1b) in response to STEC, and this secretion is modulated by the bacteria:neutrophil ratio. The study suggests that inhibiting neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) could be a potential target for limiting STEC-induced intestinal inflammation. The research was supported by various organizations including the Agencia Nacional de Promocion de la Investigacion, el Desarrollo Tecnologico y la Innovacion and the Wellcome Trust.
