A new study from the University of Montreal examines the home range overlap between small Indian mongooses and free roaming domestic dogs in Puerto Rico and its implications for rabies management. The study found that mongooses are the primary terrestrial wildlife rabies reservoir in Puerto Rico and pose a risk to public health through direct human exposure and transmission to domestic animals. The research provides evidence of interspecific interaction and contact between mongooses and dogs, suggesting that human provisioning of dogs may limit interactions between stray dogs and mongooses. The study highlights the need for further understanding of the ecological relationships and space use patterns between these species. [Extracted from the article] |
