A recent study conducted at Akdeniz University in Turkey examined the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with rheumatic diseases. The researchers used cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to compare the TMJ components of patients with rheumatic diseases to a control group. The study found that patients with rheumatic diseases had higher rates of various pathologies in the TMJ, such as condylar erosion and osteophytes, compared to the control group. The researchers concluded that dentomaxillofacial radiologists should assess the TMJ in patients with rheumatic diseases, and a multidisciplinary approach involving dental specialists and rheumatologists is necessary.
