Researchers from the University of New Mexico have developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) that can predict the presence of nodal metastases in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue by analyzing visual histopathology from the primary tumor alone. The study included 89 cases of SCC of the oral tongue, and the best performing algorithm had a sensitivity of 65% and specificity of 86% in identifying nodal metastases. This research demonstrates the potential of artificial intelligence in improving the accuracy of diagnosing and treating SCC of the oral tongue. [Extracted from the article] |
