This article discusses the importance of accurate theoretical modeling in the design of X-ray beamlines at synchrotrons and free electron lasers. The Optics & Metrology group at Diamond Light Source (DLS) has developed analytical models and used software packages for ray tracing and wavefront propagation to predict the performance of X-ray beamlines. The article presents two analytical approaches developed for modeling soft X-ray beamlines, using MATLAB and IGOR Pro. It also discusses a theoretical model for investigating the thermal distortion of cryo-cooled silicon crystals used as monochromators in hard X-ray synchrotron beamlines. These modeling tools have been used to improve beamline design at Diamond Light Source and other synchrotrons. [Extracted from the article] |
