Municipal solid waste is one of the primary contributors to Dhaka city's severe air pollution. An investigation was conducted to assess the amount of air pollution caused by the disposal of solid waste at two landfills, six secondary transfer stations (STS), three open-air dumping sites, and one control site (Ramna Park). The average emission amounts of pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, PM1.0, HCHO, TVOC, NO2, and CO were measured in landfills, STSs, and open-space dumping stations. The concentration of pollutants in landfills was higher than in STSs and open-air dumping sites. The STSs had the most poisonous atmospheres, as evidenced by the fact that the indoor air pollution level was much higher than the outside level. The negative correlation between distance and the pollutants indicates the inverse relationship between distance and pollutants concentrations. Landfills exhibited a PM2.5 toxicity potential of 11, double that of STSs and open-space dumping sites. The result of this study would help the policymakers to effectively design waste treatment facilities to reduce the health risk of humans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
