This article explores the challenges and ethical considerations faced by historians when using data in their research on slavery. It emphasizes the need for a critical and nuanced approach to data-driven scholarship, highlighting the constructed nature of historical sources and the biases embedded in historical records. The article also discusses the role of archivists in shaping access to historical records and the impact of archival arrangement and description on historians' interpretation of these records. It further examines the challenges historians face in creating well-formed structured data models to represent historical information, and the benefits and limitations of using linked data in historical research.
