The article explores Russia's involvement in the Mekong sub-region of Southeast Asia and its potential establishment of a multilateral forum called Mekong-Russia Cooperation (MRC). Russia has been actively engaging with countries like Myanmar and Thailand, particularly in defense and security matters. The MRC proposal aims to foster economic relations, exchange knowledge in various sectors, and enhance cooperation in education and public health. However, Mekong governments have expressed caution and resistance towards the proposal, preferring a gradual approach and expressing concerns about Russia's involvement due to the ongoing Ukraine crisis. The article provides insights into the complex institutional competition in the Mekong sub-region and discusses the potential benefits and challenges of Russia's multilateral engagement.
