A recent report from the Medical College of Wisconsin highlights the need for a sustainable care delivery payment model for children with medical complexity (CMC). CMC represent less than 1% of all children but account for over 30% of childhood healthcare expenditure. The report discusses how two programs in Wisconsin collaborated with their state Medicaid payer to develop a sustainable complex care payment model, which has brought value to stakeholders. Key elements of the process included developing a relationship between payer and clinicians, using an accepted clinical service model, and measuring the cost of care provided.
