A recent report from the Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in Warsaw, Poland, discusses the diagnosis and treatment of extrameningeal solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs). SFTs are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that make up less than 2% of all soft tissue masses. The report highlights the challenges in diagnosing and treating SFTs due to their lack of characteristic clinical features. The mainstay of treatment for localized SFTs is radical resection, while radiotherapy or radio-chemotherapy may be used for unresectable disease. The report also suggests that antiangiogenic therapies and certain drugs, such as imatinib and axitinib, may be effective in treating SFTs. Further investigation is needed to develop guidelines for the treatment of advanced or metastatic disease. [Extracted from the article] |
