A recent study from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) discusses a rare case of breast carcinoma presenting with upper limb lymphedema. The study highlights that lymphedema in breast cancer patients typically occurs as a result of axillary lymph node dissection, sentinel lymph node biopsy, or axillary radiotherapy. However, in this particular case, the patient did not have bulky axillary lymphadenopathy but did have a suspicious breast mass. The researchers emphasize the importance of careful imaging of the breast and axilla using tools such as mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, and PET mammography to accurately diagnose breast cancer in patients with lymphedema.
