Even before 1920, avant-garde poetry in Romania was faster than Romanian novels in breaking the taboos on the image of women. The new hypostases of femininity reflected the emancipation of society and contributed to it. Gellu Naum (1915-2001), one of the most prolific and influential writer among Romanian poets and novelists through his feminine archetypes, is a prime promoter of safeguarding the freedom of poetry. With his novel, "Zenobia" (1985), Gellu Naum creates a new realm where the ethereal and the familiar co-exist. Each of the chapters is dedicated to a peculiar space (the swamps, the city, the corridor, the ladder, the plank) where time is condensed in the 'athanor' of memory and rendered as an essential epiphany of the self.
