Abstrakt: This article discusses the practice of "ricing," which refers to the harvesting of wild rice. The author interviews Dave Dykstra, a Wisconsin resident who has been ricing for over 65 years. Dykstra learned the techniques from a member of the Ojibwe tribe. The article explains that wild rice, also known as Manoomin rice, grows in lakes with moving water and can be harvested multiple times throughout the season. Dykstra describes the process of harvesting the rice using a non-motorized boat and cedar sticks. After harvesting, the rice needs to be dried and separated from the hulls. Dykstra's daughter is also learning the tradition and they share their favorite wild rice recipes. [Extracted from the article]
