This article explores the concept of the uncanny body in Japanese religions, focusing on figures and creatures in Japanese religious traditions that are considered strange or otherworldly. It examines the role of the body in religious practice, gender and sexuality, and material culture. The article draws on theories from phenomenology, sociology, and gender studies to analyze the uncanny body in Japanese religions. Additionally, the text discusses the concept of the uncanny and its relevance to Japanese religious and cultural contexts, including Freud's theory of the uncanny and its application to yōkai in Japanese folklore.
