David Mandelbaum, co-founder and artistic director of the New Yiddish Rep, discusses the financial difficulties faced by off-Broadway theaters post-COVID. While the company has been praised for its Yiddish productions of classic plays, their mission to produce new works from young authors in Yiddish has been less financially successful. Their newest production, "The Gospel According to Chaim," is based on a true story about a Jewish man who translated and published a Yiddish edition of the New Testament. Mandelbaum hopes that this production will inspire more young people to write in Yiddish. [Extracted from the article] |
