For the safe movement of a railway vehicle along a rail track, effective interaction between the wheel and the rail is necessary, which directly depends on the dynamic and tribotechnical factors of the pair. The purpose of the provided study is to study the area of the contact patch between the wheel and the rail within implementation of the freight train movement mode options. This issue is relevant at the present time, due to the fact that the interaction is affected not only by the state of the contacting surfaces, but also by the traction characteristics developed by the crew during movement. The study was carried out by means of simulation modeling of the movement of a freight train along the real section of the Sverdlovsk railway. Two states of the pair of "wheel-rail" and three basic modes of train movement are considered. As a result, the main conclusions are drawn and tasks are set that require solutions in further study.
