Abstrakt: The article describes growth retardation, not associated with glucocorticoid therapy, among asthmatic children in New York City. While steroid therapy can result in growth retardation, and this has certainly been well documented for asthmatic children, that does not explain the poor growth when steroids were not given. The present study indicates that, in general, children with asthma will ultimately grow to a normal height. This conclusion depends upon the reliability of assessing skeletal maturity from x-rays, and on the ultimate validity of height predictions made from this assessment.
