Abstrakt: A recently discovered fossil jaw bone from the Murray River in South Australia is challenging previous theories about the evolution of baleen whales. The fossil, estimated to be around 19 million years old, belongs to a baleen whale that was approximately nine meters long, making it the largest known whale from that time period. This finding suggests that baleen whales may have evolved larger body sizes earlier than previously thought, and that the Southern Hemisphere may have been the birthplace of gigantic whale evolution. The research highlights the importance of considering fossils from the Southern Hemisphere in understanding the evolutionary history of whales. [Extracted from the article]
