A study conducted by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich compared the effectiveness of consecutive-day versus alternate-day oral iron supplementation in iron-depleted women. The study involved 150 young Swiss women with low serum ferritin levels who were randomly assigned to either receive daily iron supplements for 90 days followed by a placebo for another 90 days (consecutive-day group) or the same daily dose of iron and placebo on alternate days for 180 days (alternate-day group). The results showed that alternate-day dosing did not result in higher serum ferritin levels but reduced iron deficiency at 6 months and triggered fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to consecutive-day dosing. The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov and received financial support from Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Forderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung. [Extracted from the article] |
