A study conducted by Temple University Hospital and School of Medicine in Philadelphia examined the utility of routine blood cultures in patients with upper extremity abscesses. The study found that obtaining blood cultures, whether positive or negative, was associated with increased length of hospital stay. However, there was no association between obtaining blood cultures and the number of incision and drainage procedures performed or readmission rates. The researchers concluded that routinely obtaining blood cultures in these patients may not be beneficial. [Extracted from the article] |
