A recent study conducted at Taibah University in Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia, aimed to evaluate the accuracy of different molecular techniques for detecting drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC)-specific DNA in sputum specimens from patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis. The study compared the results obtained from the GeneXpert MTB/RIF system and a specific PCR assay targeting the IS6110 and mtp40 gene sequence fragments. The researchers found discrepancies in the results, highlighting the need for the development of novel molecular tests that can improve the detection of drug-resistant isolates in clinical specimens.
